Soldiers are your workforce and your army
Soldiers matter in two places at once. At base, they gather, mine, log, haul, research, craft, and keep production alive. On expeditions, they become your squad, your firepower, and your buffer against enemy groups.
The central challenge is deciding who stays productive at home and who leaves with you.
Keep soldiers assigned to resource jobs
Early production slows down when soldiers have no fallback job. Assign basic work such as gathering, mining, or logging so they return to useful tasks after temporary work ends.
As the colony grows, use job filters and work locks. Keep good specialists on high-value work and stop weak matches from wasting time in jobs they perform poorly.

Watch the Leader's Agenda
The Leader's Agenda is the best place to notice problems before they spiral. Use it to check urgent tasks, newly unlocked research, available blueprints, upgrade opportunities, production progress, and soldiers who are exhausted, protesting, or close to breaking.
Checking it regularly prevents the classic mistake of walking around the base while the real problem sits inside a menu.
Upgrade ship capacity
Ship technologies increase how many soldiers can join an expedition. This is one of the strongest early investments because a larger squad gives you more control in battles, more room for medics, and better odds against difficult enemy groups.
Avoid bringing the biggest squad automatically. Bring the squad your colony can afford to lose temporarily from base work.
Command the squad in combat
Fight near your soldiers. Use follow, movement, and focus-fire commands to keep the squad together and concentrate damage. If you sprint ahead alone, you give up the biggest advantage your colony has produced.
Good squad habits:
- Stay close enough that soldiers can support you.
- Focus fire on dangerous targets.
- Pull back before enemies surround the group.
- Use medics directly during tough battles.
- Keep the squad moving instead of letting it fight in bad terrain.

Prepare support roles
Medics are valuable for longer expeditions because they can heal you during fights. Second Chance gives you room to recover from a mistake. Bring these tools when you expect a hard sector, a long route, or a final battle attempt.
Keep morale under control
Soldiers are still part of the colony. Hunger, exhaustion, fear, loyalty, and poor conditions can weaken your regime from inside. Better food, stable production, and deliberate policy choices reduce the chance that soldiers become a social problem instead of a military solution.
