What kind of game is Pax Autocratica?

Pax Autocratica is a dark sci-fi colony sim mixed with first-person roguelite expeditions. You build a military state in the Tyris System, manage citizens and soldiers, research upgrades, and personally lead squads into hostile territory.

The easiest way to frame it is:

  • Colony management at the base.
  • First-person squad combat during expeditions.
  • Roguelite progression through Core Fragments, research, captures, and repeated runs.

The base is your staging ground

The colony is not just decoration. It creates the resources, soldiers, weapons, research, food, ships, and automation that determine how far your expeditions can go. A weak base makes every battle harder. A stable base lets you take bigger risks in space.

Expect to build dwellings, barracks, factories, research facilities, storage, transport systems, and other infrastructure as the campaign opens up.

Expeditions drive progression

Expeditions send you into the Tyris System for resources, prisoners, trade, Core Fragments, and sector progress. You fight in first person alongside your soldiers, then use the rewards to improve the colony before the next run.

This back-and-forth loop is the heart of the game. If you enjoy both management and action, Pax Autocratica is strongest when those two halves reinforce each other.

Is Pax Autocratica worth playing now?

It is worth considering if you want an unusual mix of colony management, political control, squad combat, and roguelite expedition planning. It is especially interesting if you like games where the systems tell the story more than traditional character dialogue.

You may want to wait if you need a finished 1.0 feature set, co-op at launch, polished UI flow, or fully streamlined management. The game asks you to manage a lot from a first-person perspective, which can feel immersive but slower than a classic top-down strategy interface.

What to expect from the tone

Pax Autocratica is satirical. You are not building a heroic utopia; you are shaping an authoritarian military regime. Fear, loyalty, propaganda, policy, punishment, morale, and social pressure are part of the colony fantasy.

The best decisions are not simply “be cruel” or “be kind.” The useful question is whether your rule keeps the colony productive, loyal enough, fed enough, and ready for war.
